Tool safety

How to use pointed tools, needles and small parts safely, and why we sell no knives or blades.

Leathercraft is a calm craft, and we want it to stay that way. This page explains which of our products have points or small parts, how to use them safely, and why we do not sell knives.

No knives, no blades

We do not sell knives, cutters, scalpels, rotary blades, spare blades or any other bladed article. Our kits do not need them: every leather piece arrives cut to shape, punched with its stitch holes and bevelled along the edges.

Pointed tools: adults only

Some tool sets contain pointed hand tools: a diamond awl, diamond pricking irons and a wing divider. Each is supplied with a guard. Products that contain them are marked on the product page, and when your cart contains one, you confirm at checkout that you are 18 or over. We ship them only to the countries listed on our Shipping page.

  • Work at a table on a firm surface. Strike pricking irons only on the rubber punch board, never on your lap or on a glass table.
  • Keep your free hand behind the point, not in front of it.
  • Put the guards back on the awl, the divider and the irons as soon as you finish, and store them out of the reach of children.
  • Do not use the tools for anything other than leathercraft.

Needles, thread and small parts

  • Our harness needles are blunt so that they follow the punched holes, but they are still needles: keep them in their case or stuck into a scrap of leather when you stop.
  • Kits contain small parts such as split rings, press studs, buckles and D-rings. They are not toys. Keep small parts away from children under 3; children need an adult to help.
  • Waxed thread can be a tangle and choking hazard for small children and pets. Keep spare lengths and offcuts out of their reach.

Mallets and stamps

  • Strike stamps and irons with the polyurethane mallet supplied in the set, with a firm but controlled blow. Do not use a metal hammer.
  • Keep your fingers below the striking end of the stamp.

Leather, wax and finishing

  • Our leather is vegetable-tanned cowhide. If you know you react to leather or to beeswax, wear gloves.
  • Our burnishing wax is a blend of beeswax and carnauba wax. Keep it away from heat sources.
